Jesus sanctioning the right to arms?

Matthew 22:36
36
And [Jesus] said to [His disciples], "But now, whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and whoever has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one.

Could this verse be Jesus sanctioning our right to arm ourselves for defense? He here instructs His disciples to buy swords to arm themselves as they set out across the countryside to spread His message.

That'd be a little tough for this Mennonite to swallow!

Yah i ran across that verse tonight...and that thought never struck me until now (there's a lot of "gun control" issues going on the States). And I'm thinking...well Jesus is sanctioning our right to use weapons for defense here in his commands to his disciples...interesting verse it is...and one i think i'm probably going to be quoting quite a bit in the near future in dealing with this issue.

This reminds me of a what a preacher once said. He said that he doesn't agree with everything in the Bible, but when it comes to something he doesn't agree with it is better to trust that God's understanding is better than ours so he follows it anyway.

Or in other words, it's better to follow and believe the Bible, even if you don't agree with something that it says.

It is interesting to see that towns that encourage or even make it a law that each household must have a gun has a lot less crime and murder than towns where guns are scarce or illegal. If everyone had a gun, there would be less of a use for it because not many people are stupid enough to break into a house that is armed.

I don't agree with that "a gun in every house" statement...the core reason for gun violence today is SIN and the absence of the life changing power of the Holy Spirit in people's lives.

We can get rid of guns...but the sin to do violence will be there and those who're steeped in sin will find other weapons to use to kill.

Guns aren't the problem...it's the human condition of their fleshly nature.
